The muk Blow 3900IR is the flagship blow dryer we launched, designed by hairdressers for hairdressers, and it has been working on professional salon floors ever since. It runs at 2300 watts, so it moves water out of the hair quickly, and the infrared lights embedded in the barrel warm the hair from within rather than blasting the outside of it.

An ionic generator runs alongside them, putting millions of negative ions into the airflow to smooth the cuticle and hold shine in. Between the two, hair comes out of a blow dry looking better than it went in.

The fan speed and the temperature adjust separately, which matters more than it sounds: fine or bleached hair wants low and slow, coarse hair wants high on both, and most hair is somewhere in between. The three metre swivel cord is a salon length, because it was built to reach around a salon chair, and it comes with a two year warranty.

Choosing between our two dryers? Both are professional salon dryers and both run the same infrared and ionic technology, so this isn't a choice between a good one and a better one. This is the original: 2300 watts, the long salon cord, and a choice of rose gold or matte black. TIPS FROM MUK

Settings by hair type:

Keep the dryer moving, and keep it at least 15cm from the hair. That's what stops one spot taking all the heat. When you're doing a bouncy blowout and you want the curl to last, finish each section with the cool shot before you let it go.

Rose gold or matte black?

The one decision on this page that has nothing to do with your hair, so enjoy it. They're the same dryer inside, same motor, same infrared lights, same ionic generator, so pick the one you'd rather see sitting on your bench every morning. Rose gold is the one people comment on. Matte black disappears into a dark bathroom and never shows a fingerprint.

Do I need the Diffuser?

Only if you have curls or waves you want to keep. A nozzle concentrates the air into a narrow, fast stream, which is exactly what you want for a smooth blow wave and the opposite of what you want for curl: it pushes curls apart and roughs up the cuticle, and that is where frizz comes from. The muk Blow Diffuser spreads that same air over a wider area and slows it down, so curls dry into their own shape, stay separated and hold more volume at the root. Our muk in-house professional hairdressers reach for it on any curly or wavy blow dry. It clicks straight onto the nozzle of this dryer and can be purchased separately whenever you want it, so it's worth adding if you wear your natural texture. If you blow-dry smooth, you don't need one.

How far should I hold it from my hair?

At least 15cm, and keep it moving. Our muk in-house professional hairdressers are strict about this one: holding a dryer still and close concentrates all the heat into one spot, and that is what causes damage rather than the dryer itself. Keeping it moving also dries more evenly, so you finish sooner.
