It's the modern, sleek evolution of our flagship 3900IR: everything a hairdresser needs on a salon floor, in a body that weighs 390 grams, with a high speed brushless motor that runs noticeably quieter than a conventional one. When you hold a dryer for eight hours a day, that combination stops being a nice touch and starts being the reason you pick it up.

The technology inside is professional. Far infrared lights sit in the barrel and warm the hair from within rather than blasting the outside of it, and an ionic generator puts millions of negative ions through the airflow for shine and smoothness.

Three fan speeds and three temperature settings adjust independently, and there's a no-hold cool shot, so you can set a section without holding a button down. It has a lock feature and it cleans its own filter, which is the kind of detail that comes from designing a dryer for people who use one all day.

It arrives with two nozzles and a diffuser. That's worth knowing before you buy, because it means a curly routine works out of the box with nothing else added.

No, there's one in the box. The muk Ultra Sonic Dryer comes with two nozzles and a diffuser, so a curly or wavy routine works from the day it arrives with nothing else added. The muk Blow Diffuser that's sold separately is the attachment for the muk Blow 3900IR, so if you own this dryer you don't need to buy it.

Is it quiet enough to use early in the morning?

Noticeably quieter than a conventional dryer, which is exactly why the brushless motor is in there: a salon running six of these all day was the design brief. It's still a hairdryer, so it isn't silent, but you can hold a conversation over it.

What does the cool shot do?

It sets the shape. Warm hair is soft and moves, cool hair holds where you left it, so finishing a section with cool air before you release it makes the shape last. Our muk in-house professional hairdressers do it on every section of a blowout, and on this dryer the cool shot is no-hold, so you aren't pressing a button while you work the brush.
